PERSONAL STATEMENT

Ritvik's Common Application Essay

I wanted to forget this moment, but endless forced lessons instead branded this feeling of discontent in my emotions, further proving the instrument’s inherent futility. Bemused, I became intent on finding purpose in this instrument, this glorified piece of wood. Persistent, I found myself shaping new opportunities into learning experiences, truly exploring the world around me through the lens of a pianist.

The time signature: a simple fraction that opened up a world of mathematics. A simple fraction that not only laid out the foundation of a musical piece, but allowed me to solve mathematical problems, in an unconventional yet convenient way. Early on in elementary school, where students learned fractions as a part of a whole, I began to see fractions as beats per measure. A newfound fondness for mathematics, I realized, was fueled by a hunger for exploration.

The Fibonacci sequence. The complexity in the name itself begged me to grasp a comprehensive understanding of the topic. When learning about various complex sequences in Algebra 2, I drew an immediate parallel; the Fibonacci sequence was simply a C scale on the piano encompassing thirteen keys, eight white and five black, in groups of twos and threes, each number a sum of the two numbers preceding it. Surprisingly, aspects of music theory prompted me to approach every question as an articulate musical note, critically analyzing all of its distinct features. I quickly realized that the ignorance in my perception could be overcome by immersing myself into new learning experiences.

Dynamics; which without, music seemed empty. At a much younger age, I had to understand the true “purpose” of music: to modulate our emotions. Consequently, I strived to make every piece I played my own. I was telling a story, whether that be an emotional fairy tale, or a suspenseful drama. I yearned to explore composition, analyzing Mozart’s fast-paced sonatinas and Tchaikovsky’s symphonious operas. Music gave me a creative license that I could not find elsewhere, motivating me to learn music history, yet making me humorously susceptible to many friends ridiculing my unconventional interests ...
